Unlike father, unlike son

Manila’s Mayor Alfredo Lim has a well-deserved reputation for fairness in enforcing laws . . . albeit sometimes unconventionally.

The mayor had an unusual opportunity to prove this once again yesterday when he was informed of his son’s arrest by elements of the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) in a drug buy bust operation last Friday. Manny Santos Lim, a businessman, was busted while allegedly trying to sell a quantity of shabu in Binondo that had an estimated street value of over half a million pesos.

Instead of trying to get his 44-year old son off the hook, Mayor Lim was reported to have commended the PDEA and said he would “not lift a finger” to help him.

And this begs the question: Had it been one of Pres. Arroyo’s sons that had been in similar trouble, would she and the FG have taken the same position as Mayor Lim’s?
