PNP’s blast theory bombs

Posted on January 24, 2008 - Filed Under Headliners, Governance

Despite preliminary findings by government forensics investigators that mentioned the presence of traces of RDX at the Glorietta 2 shopping mall blast site, the Philippine National Police has issued a final report that lays the blame squarely on methane gas that supposedly collected in a ‘pozo negro’ in the mall’s basement that may have ignited spontaneously.

However, perhaps anticipating that PNP authorities would try to whitewash what looked like a terrorist bombing incident, Ayala Land collected forensic samples on November 2nd and 6th . . . with prior clearance from police authorities . . . and sent these to a reputable forensics lab in Texas. This has turned out to be a smart move on the part of Ayala Land because the US forensics experts’ own findings have demolished the PNP’s theory, saying in part:

“Each of the six samples examined bore the presence of significant quantities of high order explosives’ residue,” according to Armstrong.

“Each of the six samples shows at least three high explosive components. Five of the six samples show the presence of the widely used explosive, RDX.”

The rest of the Philippine Star story is here.

Now we know why Raul Gonzalez has been hemming and hawing about blaming Ayala Land for negligence. The DoJ sec must have seen the PNP’s theory for what it is: Nothing but a lot of excrement!
