The First Noelle: Pinays conquer Mt. Everest

Posted on June 3, 2007 - Filed Under Pinoys Extraordinaire

In the aftermath of the midterm Philippine elections, the uncommon feat of the first Filipinas to conquer Mt. Everest on May 15th was hardly noticed by the local press that has been preoccupied with allegations and counter-allegations of dagdag-bawas or Florida-style ballot counting.

First to scale the summit at approximately 8:10 a.m. (Manila time) was Noelle Wenceslao. She was joined some ten minutes later by Carina Dayondon. Making it a triumvirate after half an hour was Janet Belarmino . . . who had given birth just 5 months ago to a son whom she has aptly named Himalaya.

As if the ascent from Tibet was not challenging enough, Noelle and the two other intrepid Pinays chose to descend on the Nepal side . . . said to be a more treacherous route . . . and thus became the first ever females of any country to traverse Everest!
